Whilst phones are not banned, Youth Members are not required to bring a mobile phone. 

Tablets are being provided to each Unit to access any required Jamboree information and catch-up on Jamboree news.

Contingents will also be providing guidance to their attendees and their Jamboree Scout Leaders on this matter.

ESSENTIAL RULE

No mobile phones are permitted inside or immediately outside of toilet, shower or changing facilities (e.g., walking past talking on the phone is ok, hanging around outside the building with your phone to record is not ok).    

Youth Participants

Note that no charging infrastructure will be provided and that individuals take full responsibility for any loss or damage. 

The Jamboree Scout Leaders (in consultation with Unit Council) will determine how phones are used by their unit.  It is recommended that phones are secured in a Unit lockbox when not in use – both for security of the device and to manage usage hours.

Each Unit will develop a Code of Conduct which includes expectations around responsible mobile phone usage such as:

• Being visible when using your phone – out of hearing but in sight is ok.
• Phones not to leave the Unit site/surrounding walkway.
• Limiting usage when with others (i.e., when they should be interacting).
• Responsible use (i.e., doing the right thing).
• Being alert to signs of cyber-bullying and other misuse (i.e., to look out for each other)..

Venturer Scout Service Leaders

Venturer Scout Service Leaders are allowed to bring their own device, on the understanding that they take full accountability for any loss or damage. You will need to consider how to keep your device charged with limited charging infrastructure on site (e.g., solar panels, battery packs & limiting use).

Venturer Scouts will be expected to sign a Code of Conduct developed by the Service Venturer Subcamp. This will include expectations around responsible mobile phone usage such as:

• Limiting usage in tents (i.e., when you should be sleeping).
• Limiting usage when with others (i.e., when you should be interacting).
• Responsible use (i.e., doing the right thing).
• Being alert to signs of cyber-bullying and other misuse (i.e., to look out for each other).

Parents, please note

• No news is good news – usually means they are having a great time and too busy to call.
• A phone call home can make homesickness worse, not better.
• If your youth member brings a phone, please set them up for success by talking about responsible usage.
• The Queensland Police Service are likely to be involved in investigating reports of improper mobile phone use.
