Fire Services at the Jamboree

A Queensland Fire Department team is based on the Jamboree site near the bus terminal.

Fire Incident

Two types of fire incidents may affect the Jamboree:

  1. Internal – started inside the boundaries of the Jamboree site and harms or threatens to harm multiple Unit sites, Subcamps, activity zones, etc.
  2. External – started outside the boundaries of the Jamboree site but poses a major risk to the Jamboree (e.g., potential travel path).  Should the Jamboree be placed at risk by an external fire, the Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) will activate the emergency response plan in conjunction with Emergency Services.

Internal Fire Procedure

In the event of discovering a fire on the Jamboree site:

  • Raise the alarm
  • Send for help – have someone contact the Emergency Communications Centre (ECC) on 4333 1500
  • Adults should attempt to quell the fire if safe to do so with Fire Fighting Equipment (unit buckets, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, hoses or dirt)
  • Adults should ensure that the immediate vicinity of the fire is evacuated to avoid risk to personnel
  • Await assistance from Safety & Security and Emergency Services
  • If the fire is in a Subcamp, the Subcamp Leaders should take extinguishers to the fire site and provide assistance with quelling the fire (if safe to do so) or evacuating personnel from the immediate vicinity.
  • If the fire is in an activity or work zone, the zone leaders should take extinguishers to the fire site and provide assistance with quelling the fire (if safe to do so) and evacuate personnel from the zone.
  • In all cases, on arrival of Safety & Security Leaders or Emergency Services personnel, follow their directions at all times.

Fire Extinguishers and Their Use

Most fires on a small scale, if quickly detected can be controlled.  Portable fire extinguishers are designed precisely for this purpose. There are different types of extinguishers that may be used very effectively over a wide range of fires. The Jamboree site is equipped with Dry Chemical and Water Extinguishers in every Unit site, Sub Camp, Contingent Headquarters, activity zones, etc.

  • Each Unit site will have 1 x .9kg dry powder type extinguisher (and eight red fire buckets).
  • Each Sub Camp will have 1 x 9kg Dry Chemical extinguisher.

Fighting fire with an extinguisher:

  • Do not panic
  • Warn others in the immediate vicinity
  • Select appropriate type of extinguisher
  • Do not get close to the fire
  • Always ensure you can retreat backwards – open space
  • Keep low and avoid smoke inhalation
  • Break seal and remove pin from extinguisher
  • Aim extinguisher hose at the base of the fire (not at the smoke)
  • Squeeze trigger
  • Move hose in sweeping motion at fire

If the fire becomes too large or your extinguisher cannot handle the task – retreat and await emergency services.

Fire Blankets and Their Use

  • Fire blankets are being provided to each Unit site and cooking location.

Fighting fire with a blanket:

  • Remove blanket from its red plastic case and carry to fire
  • Grasp blanket by fitted tabs and wrap hands into blanket
  • Approach fire with arms straight, using the blanket for protection
  • Gently lower blanket onto fire by bending legs and keeping head at hand level
  • Turn off the source of the heat if possible
  • Leave the blanket on the pot or BBQ
  • Do not remove the pot or item from the BBQ
  • Await the arrival of emergency services
